Wharf history

The entire Bay Area is rich with fishing opportunities, and this famous region of San Francisco started as a harbor for many of the area’s sea captains. As the docks developed so did the city, and as the fishing industry moved on to other ports, tourism, shopping, and dining moved in. Cable cars have been serving Fisherman’s Wharf since the 1800’s. Today Pier 39 is one of the best known attractions in the world.

Community outreach

The Fisherman’s Wharf Merchant’s Association works hard to involved the neighborhood in everything they do. They sponsor a youth fishing program, and there’s also The Fishermen’s and Seamen’s Memorial Chapel, dedicated to all of those who lost their life at sea.

  • What is the best way to get there?

There’s nothing like taking the historic Cable Cars across the city, but arriving in Fisherman’s Wharf is an unforgettable experience. Public transit also makes Fisherman’s Wharf easy accessible and the F-Line street car goes directly there. If you like to walk, the neighborhood is within a quick reach of many of San Francisco’s most popular areas.
  • Is there good shopping?

This is a souvenir shoppers dream for anyone who loves visiting the city by the bay. At the heart of Fisherman’s Wharf is Anchorage Square filled with over 35 shops for gifts, sweets, and games. Other must-see stores are Ghirardelli Chocolate, Dudley Perkins Harley shop, and The Winery Collective.
