San Francisco Shopping

San Francisco offers an abundance of interesting neighborhoods and streets lined with unique shopping opportunities -from couture to kitche. Each of these interesting shopping areas has its own distinct flavor and price range.

Union Square . Union Square is the shopping hub of San Francisco . Every major haute couture, jewelry and department store has a presence here, including Neiman-Marcus , Saks Fifth Avenue , Macy's and Nordstrom . Surrounding the park square are major department stores, luxury boutiques and superstores, like Niketown.

Union Street . Union Street is a trendy and crowded artery - between Gough and Steiner streets - with designer boutiques, upscale chains and gift shops. The first neighborhood in San Francisco to convert its Victorians into boutiques, art galleries and restaurants, Union Street 's distinct turn-of-the-century atmosphere makes a walk along its streets a delightful journey back in time. Fascinating stores and art galleries are scattered throughout Union Street .

Fillmore Street . Near Pacific Heights on Fillmore Street south of Broadway are a number of upscale clothing, kitchenware and home furnishing stores. Fillmore Street , between Jackson and Bush streets, offers many chic boutiques, handmade gifts, and elegant houseware shops. The 2,000 to 2,200 blocks of Fillmore offer a smorgasbord of vintage clothing shops.

Chestnut Street . Nestled away from its upscale neighbor, Union Street , Chestnut Street retains its local flavor with an abundance of unique shops, grocers and florists. Chestnut Street is a favorite shopping spot of Marina district residents.

Haight-Ashbury . The "Summer of Love" still lives in shops and boutiques throughout this charming Victorian sector. Vintage clothing, books and record shops are abundant along Haight Street , the neighborhood's busiest stretch. Although a Gap looms over the corner of Haight and Ashbury , a non-conformist vibe still lurks in the many small stores selling alternative clothes, shoes and accessories. Bargain hunters will find heaps of great vintage clothes.

Castro. The heart of gay life in San Francisco , the Castro is a Mecca for quirky, creative housewares and novelty gifts. Gorgeous Italian teapots, handmade cards, phallic keychains, gourmet foods and leather pants are within an easy stroll of one another in this hip, fashion forward neighborhood.

Hayes Street . From distinctive leather goods to fine lingerie and everything in between, the tree-lined 500 block of Hayes Street is a shopping paradise.

North Beach/ Upper Grant Avenue. A tiny street hidden away in the charming North Beach area, upper Grant Avenue has many locally owned and operated clothing and gift shops. Don't miss City Lights, a world famous bookstore frequented by the "beat generation."

Valencia Street. In the heart of the Mission District, Valencia Street teems with vintage furniture shops, thrift stores, and Mexican folk art shops.
