A former high-security federal prison where Al Capone and the infamous "Birdman of Alcatraz" served time, Alcatraz Island can be reached by ferry that leaves from Fisherman's Wharf in San Francisco. Part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, Alcatraz Island offers audio tours as well as access to a variety of exhibits, an historic fort, and gardens. www.nps.gov/alcatraz

Alcatraz Tours & Exhibits -

An audio tour, which is available in many different languages, is included in the price of your ferry ticket. The tour covers the inside of the prison during the island's penitentiary years (1934-1963). Check out the Civil War-era buildings that are reminders of when the island was both a harbor defense fort and a military prison.

There are also visual markers that highlight the American Indian Occupation from 1969 after the prison closed, which was a watershed moment in the Native American rights movement. www.nps.gov/alcatraz

Alcatraz Flora & Fauna -

Alcatraz is where you'll encounter thousands of roosting and nesting seabirds. Feeding or disturbing any wildlife is against the law. The island is also home to rare flowers and plants in a beautiful garden setting. www.nps.gov/alcatraz

Alcatraz Weather -

The weather on Alcatraz Island, much like San Francisco, can be unpredictable. It can also change on a moment's notice. While it may be warm and sunny in the city, it can be windy and cool on the island. Summertime is often cool as the fog comes in. Play it safe by dressing in layers. www.nps.gov/alcatraz
